Sleep Scientist is built to collect as little as possible. Personal use is fully on-device and needs no account. Data only leaves your phone if you explicitly join a community study, and then only as anonymous, derived numbers.

What stays on your device (always)

Your sleep data read from Apple Health, your phone-motion signals, your experiments, results, and baseline answers are processed and stored locally (iOS UserDefaults / on-device files). We only ever read Health data — we never write to it, and we never store health data in iCloud.

What a community study receives (only if you join one)

An anonymous participant code — a one-way hash of a random per-install identifier. Not your name, email, or device ID, and not reversible to you.
For each night, the derived metric value (e.g. minutes asleep), the date, and whether it was an intervention night. No raw Health data, no location, nothing else. Values are range-checked server-side.

Study creators

Publishing a study uses Sign in with Apple. We store only a hash of your Apple identifier — never your name, email, or Apple credentials. Each study creator is the responsible party for their own study and consent.

What we never do

No advertising identifiers, no analytics SDKs, no third-party trackers, no selling of data.

Your rights

Delete any experiment to remove its data from your device. Withdrawing from a community study removes your contributed observations from that study. You can revoke Health and Motion access any time in iOS Settings.

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address.
