For researchers — running a study
Sleep Scientist is a platform that hosts sleep studies. When
you publish one, you are the responsible researcher — the app
surfaces, records, and enforces your decisions; it does not run the study for you.
Outcomes are measured objectively from Apple Health, so there's no assessor bias.
What you set when you publish
- Intervention & outcome — the behaviour to test and the
sleep metric it targets (more total sleep, earlier onset, wind-down).
- Randomization — participants are assigned to arms
server-side, balanced across the cohort.
- Blinding — open-label, or blinded (participants aren't told
their group, the metric, or results until the study ends). Behaviour can't
be fully double-blinded, but blinding still removes expectation bias.
- Eligible regions — you choose which countries you accept
participants from, and you are responsible for meeting each region's
requirements.
- Duration & enrollment window — how long each
participant runs (a few weeks to years, or open-ended) and a last date to
join. Blinded studies unblind when a participant's window ends.
- Your own consent form — shown to every participant before
they enroll. You own its content.
- Ethics attestation — you confirm you hold the necessary
ethics/IRB approval or a documented exemption, and can provide proof.
Your responsibilities
Ethics/IRB approval, a lawful basis and consent appropriate to each region you
enroll in, honest claims (this is a wellness tool — no diagnosis or treatment
claims), and participant safety. Sleep Scientist provides the mechanism and the
anonymous, derived data; it does not provide ethics approval or legal cover.
What participants share with you
Only anonymous, derived nightly metrics tied to a one-way participant hash —
never raw Health data or identities. See the Privacy Policy.
